In Search of the Cathedral in the Desert

In 1966 the Glen Canyon Dam was built, creating what is now known as Lake Powell by flooding an enormous canyon system. With this change, countless geological formations became hidden from view as they were submerged. Now, with receding water levels, some of these formations are once again visible. One such feature is a large natural amphitheater, “the Cathedral in the Desert”, also known as the heart of Glen Canyon. Spanning two weeks and over 100 miles by kayak we took in the incredible natural beauty of this hard to access place in an unforgiving and unpredictable season - spring. Through nights where the temperatures plummeted below freezing and strong winds that whipped through the sandstone canyons, we became enthralled by the dynamic, harsh, and undeniable beauty of the desert.
